It is with plenty of excitement that we announce that this September, we will be bringing our popular pop-up drag brunch event, Drags Benny, to Vancouver in support of Qmunity Resource Centre. The swanky and fun-filled brunch will be taking place on Saturday, September 1, 2018 in partnership with Savoury Chef Foods at the beautiful waterfront event space, Waterview, on the cusp of the city’s downtown core.
With wonderful views of the ocean as well as the iconic Granville Island, the Vancouver edition of Drags Benny will kick off at 11:30 a.m. with a morning cocktail and brunch canape hour, followed by a three-course brunch, created by Savoury Chef Foods executive chef, Geoff Rogers. To complement the Top Chef Canada alumnus' unique dishes, mixologists have also been tasked with creating an imaginative brunch cocktail list inspired by each drag performer.
Headlining the drag performances for the afternoon will be New York's Yuhua Hamasaki. The talented drag performer rose to international fame after appearing on season ten of the Emmy Award winning reality competition series, RuPaul's Drag Race earlier this year. Hamasaki is best known for her zippy commentary as well as her seamstress skills, as she designed many, many stunning outfits for her fellow competitors as well as queens in New York City and beyond.
“I am super, duper excited to be coming to Canada at the end of summer to perform for the first time ever,” says Hamasaki on headlining the unique fundraiser event which sees proceeds going towards Qmunity, a resource centre for queer, trans and two-spirited individuals. "I love being a part of events like this that support local LGBT communities and I love to eat. Let’s brunch!”
“When we heard about the success of Drags Benny in Calgary, I knew we had to bring the concept to Vancouver. The LGBT community is a vital part of our city’s fabric and we are proud to support it,” explains Savoury Chef Foods owner Anna Wallner. “Chef Rogers and his team love getting the opportunity to be creative and just as drag is a creative expression, we too relish the chance to surprise and impress guests with our top-shelf, mouth-watering culinary offerings.”
In addition to partial proceeds from ticket sales, the brunch will also feature a silent auction of one-of-a-kind packages, including an exclusive at-home dinner for four created by executive chef Rogers. All the proceeds from this auction will go towards Qmunity.
Tickets are available for $120 (includes two complimentary drinks, welcome hour canapes, a three-course brunch and performances).
