With a celebrated catalogue that dates back to the early 1990s, Manitoba-based band Doc Walker has become known across the country as one of Canada’s most successful country groups.
In addition to accruing millions of streams and more than 20 Top 10 singles, Doc Walker duo Chris Thorsteinson and Dave Wasyliw have garnered decades of acclaim from fans and critics alike, earning 14 Canadian Country Music Awards on 40 nominations and a Juno Award for Country Album of the Year.
After a brief hiatus following their latest full-length album in 2017, Doc Walker recently released their first single of 2021, She Wants What She Wants, an upbeat twangy tune about a woman leaving her man behind after being treated like an afterthought.
Later this month, Doc Walker is heading to London, Ontario with The Blue Jay Sessions to celebrate the CCMA Awards and will be performing a special brunch songwriter’s session at Union Ten Distilling Co. on November 28 alongside Taylor-Rae and Raquel Cole.
We recently caught up with Doc Walker’s Chis Thorsteinson, who took some time to dish on his favourite food and drink spots in his home province of Manitoba.
Breakfast
[Tornadoes.] This place is locally owned, and they go above and beyond to make sure the food is amazing and no one leaves hungry.
Lunch
Hands Down, Over The Coals. The chicken sub is life changing and the Greek salad is the best I’ve had. All around a great place!
Dinner
[Bill’s Sticky Fingers] is a small quiet place with, by far, some of the best pizza I ever had and believe me we are traveling musicians, so we’ve had our fair share of pizza.
Drinks
[The Tavern at Canad Inn (Curling Club) is a] Great place to meet up with friends and play darts while grabbing a drink, or watch curling or a Jets game. I have a few honourable mentions if you’re ever passing through Portage La Prairie, MB; Heatz, Mole Guacamole and Jimmy’s.
The one thing all these restaurants have in common is they are family owned and the owners/staff treat you as if you were a guest in their home. We are spoiled in the small city of Portage la Prairie and should be thankful for the people who put their heart and soul into their businesses. We love to support them any chance we can.
