One Day in Winnipeg: singer Tyler Del Pino

The rock-pop singer on must-try restaurants in Winnipeg

One of the things that we love most about Winnipeg is that its music scene is just as dynamic and vast as its food scene.

Winnipeg's Tyler Del Pino has long been creating music in the city, performing live regularly around town (in addition to touring the country) as well as programming the NASHVILLE MB songwriters' rounds that take place monthly at Kilter Brewing. With songs that blur the lines between Rock-Pop, Americana, and East Coast folk-rock, Del Pino has a penchant for songwriting with starry-eyed narratives and a sound that's all his own.

His brand-new single "Wolf In The Hen House" is a rock-pop anthem that calls out individuals who choose to exploite others for their own personal gain.

“We live in a world where it feels like there’s always another story about some asshole making someone else’s life harder than it needs to be,” Tyler Del Pino explains. “I have never understood why it’s so challenging for people to be kind towards one another, so I was trying to depict the worst kind of character I could imagine and hopefully people listening want to be the opposite.”

When he's not busy creating or teaching music, Del Pino is not only an avid foodie that frequents many great spots in Winnipeg, but you might be interested to know that he's a skilled home pizzaiolo too!

From one of Canada's best brunch spots to a cocktail hotspot in the Corydon neighbourhood, here are Tyler Del Pino's favourite spots in Winnipeg.

Breakfast

Clementine is an absolute gem nestled in the heart of downtown Winnipeg's exchange district. Their unwavering commitment to quality and constant culinary experimentation sets them apart.

The concise menu is well thought out, offering carefully curated options that showcase the chef's talents. The inviting ambience best described as "classy basement breakfast bar" exudes warmth and comfort, making it a place you won't want to leave. However, be prepared to wait on Saturday and Sunday mornings if you’re hoping to catch brunch, as it can get quite busy. Yet, the anticipation is well worth it, as the reasonably priced dishes consistently deliver an explosion of flavors.

Clementine is a definite winner in the Winnipeg dining scene, a must-visit for food enthusiasts seeking a slam dunk culinary experience.

Lunch

Myer's Delicatessen is a delightful find on Grant Street in Winnipeg, taking you back to the classic 60s sandwich shop era with its nostalgic Coca-Cola-themed decor.

They serve up amazing sandwiches using fresh local breads and baking, including Montreal bagels and authentic Montreal smoked meat. From corned beef to house-made turkey, roast beef to chicken salad, and an array of other options, their sandwiches are always stacked high and delicious.

When I'm in a hurry during lunchtime, I always after something tasty and convenient, and Myer's Delicatessen never disappoints. Every time I'm in the area, I can't help but wonder if I can squeeze in a visit for one of their mouthwatering smoked meat sandwiches. It's definitely a winner in my book!

Dinner

Merchant Kitchen is worth a shout-out when it comes to finding a great dinner spot in downtown Winnipeg. This fusion restaurant takes flavours and techniques from as they put it “a whopping 21 cities and 14 countries”, resulting in a menu that's packed with surprises.

What I love about this place is its prime location, perfect for grabbing a bite before an event. The prices won't break the bank, and every dish brings something special to the table. One of their signature dishes is KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), and it's a real showstopper with two unique sauces that give it an authentic twist.

Whether you're in the mood for a light snack or a full-blown feast, Merchant Kitchen has got you covered. And the decor? Think casual meets classy, with a trendy mix of red, black, and gold that's sure to make you feel right at home.

Cocktails

The Roost is a hidden gem in the charming Corydon area of Winnipeg, and let me tell you, their cocktails are top-notch! They have a knack for mixology that's truly impressive, crafting unique and imaginative concoctions that cater to every taste bud.

Don't let the small size of the place fool you–their rooftop patio is a must-visit during the summer, offering a delightful setting to enjoy your cocktail. Whether you're looking for a cozy catch-up with old friends or a quick pre-game drink before heading to another event, The Roost on Corydon is the perfect spot to kick back and indulge in some seriously good libations.
