After the initial callout for a Toronto restaurant critic back in December, The Globe and Mail finally debutted its new columnist's first review in today's newspaper. It's unclear how many people applied for the coveted position, but the new critic for the GTA, Jason Chow, has some big shoes to fill, considering his predecessors are Top Chef Canada judge, Chris Nuttall-Smith (10 years) and Joanne Kates, who held the post for a commendable 38 years before Nuttall-Smith.
Chow holds a culinary diploma from École Grégoire-Ferrandi in Paris and has previously worked as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, mostly covering the luxury sector, French auto industry and wealth. His first review is an evenhanded two-star critique of Alo's new sister restaurant, Aloette, which opened this past fall. This is the first time in almost a year and half that the paper has published a restaurant review, so it's gratifying to see the Toronto program back in action.
For my inaugural restaurant review for @globeandmail, I head to Aloette: https://t.co/818bcvg9Zc
