Chili apple barbecue sauce

It is so easy to make a barbecue sauce at home, so leave whatever prepackaged varieties you may have in your fridge for emergencies and make this one at home if you have a few minutes. This sauce works beautifully on the grill with anything from chicken thighs to thick slices of zucchini or cauliflower steaks. Heat up that Char-Broil grill and get cooking outside this summer.

1 tbsp canola oil
1 yellow onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
2 Fuji apples, cored, halved and cut in 1/2" cubes
1½ cup white vinegar
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup molasses
½ cup honey
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp chili flakes
1 tsp ground cinnamon
salt and pepper, to taste
olive oil

Heat canola oil in a large pan over medium-high heat, add onions and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add in diced apple, reduce heat to medium and continue to cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add remaining ingredients and stir until the brown sugar has dissolved.

Once the mixture comes to a boil, reduce to low heat and let simmer, uncovered, for 25 minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Place contents of pan in a blender and puree until smooth.

Transfer to container and refrigerate. Will keep for up to a week
