Bittered Sling Top Shelf Vieux Carré

A strong but smooth cocktail, inspired by New Orleans' French Quarter

You don't have to visit New Orlean's French Quarter for a good Vieux Carré. You can make this modern variation right at home, using Lauren Mote's recipe. Here, she keeps the quintessential rye whisky, cognac and Benedictine, but updates it using herbal and citrusy dry bitters as well as cherry bitters from Bittered Sling Extracts.

1 oz. Willett Distillery's 25 year Straight Rye Whiskey
1 oz. Courvoisier Extra
1/2 oz. Riga Black Balsams Amaro
1/4 oz. Benedictine
2 dashes Bittered Sling Kensington Dry Aromatic Bitters
2 dashes Bittered Sling Suius Cherry bitters

Stir all ingredients with ice in a mixing glass, until well chilled and diluted. Single strain using a julep strainer over one large cube in a big etched crystal tumbler or old-fashioned glass, and finish by squeezing the oils from an orange peel over the top of the cocktail, and drop the peel into the drink.
