There's been much cause for celebration at Toronto's Don Alfonso 1890 recently, as the acclaimed restaurant was just awarded a coveted Tre Forchette (“Three Forks”) designation during the 2023 Top Italian Restaurants Awards. This international awards system celebrates Italian restaurants around the globe who have exemplar Italian food and wine programs.

Don Alfonso 1890 is one of just two restaurants in the country to receive this accolade this year, with the second being Vancouver's notable Cioppino.

“My team and I are extremely honoured to receive the prestigious Tre Forchette top award, which attests to our vision to represent the very best of Italian cuisine in our city, and in Canada,” said Don Alfonso 1890 executive chef Daniele Corona. “The award speaks to our mission to offer the very best in hospitality excellence and continue the traditions of the finest in Italian cuisine, around the world.”

While the famed Toronto restaurant works tirelessly to create top-tier Italian fare worthy of a Michelin Star (you can find them listed in the current Toronto Michelin Guide), Don Alfonso 1890 loves serving up a casual, crushable summer drink too.

Here's the restaurant's easy-to-make recipe for a berry smash cocktail.

The Don Alfonso Berry Smash

4 fresh raspberries
4 fresh blackberries
1 tsp granulated white sugar
1.5 oz Ketel One vodka
2 oz orange juice
1 oz pineapple juice
fresh mint, for garnish

Place berries and sugar into a cocktail shaker and muddle until sugar dissolves

Add vodka and juice, fill with ice and shake for approximately 15 seconds.

Strain into a glass filled with crushed ice and top with soda water.

Garnish with fresh mint and serve.
