Turmeric is all the rage right now. The rhizome, a cousin of ginger, is hailed for its health benefits and it can be used in a ton of ways. Madeleine MacDonald, bar manager of Calgary's Model Milk bistro, shows us how to use it in this lemonade cocktail.
1 1/2 oz. Beefeater Gin
1/2 oz. Strega liqueur
3/4 oz. lemon juice
1/2 oz. turmeric syrup, recipe below
1 dash Angostura Bitters
soda water, enough to top the glass
Combine all ingredients in a collins glass. Lightly stir. Top with soda.
Garnish with a lemon wheel.
Turmeric syrup
4 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/4 cup grated fresh turmeric, (wear gloves!)
Combine all ingredients in a pot over high heat.
Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
Cool and store in air tight containers for up to two weeks.
