While country music's connection to food may not be all that obvious, both are deeply connected to the land they came from. In musician Mariel Buckley's case, her Prairie roots have given her music a wry, no-bullshit sound that's full of grit and truth.
Buckley’s spectacular sophomore full-length album, Driving In The Dark, led by singles “Rose Coloured Frames” and “One Time Asking”, is enhanced by the impressive team she assembled for the recording sessions, led by producer Leeroy Stagger at his Rebeltone Ranch studio in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Buckley has made a powerful statement with her music thus far, with opening slots for k.d. lang, Hayes Carll, Whitehorse and The Deep Dark Woods. Recently named the 2019 Project Wild winner, Buckley also has a strong point of view as it relates to food. John's Breakfast and Lunch on 4th Street has the best basic breakfast in town, with a full Chinese-Vietnamese menu to match. It's insane value for the price. Have an eggroll with your bacon; it’s f&%king perfect.
Lunch
The Ship and Anchor has the best patio in town, unreal service and food, great specials every single day. It's also the premier gathering spot for the Calgary arts community.
Dinner
Not great for a budget night out, but Big Fish boasts the best seafood in town, attached to the most incredible steakhouse, Open Range--best cocktails bar-none. And you can order from either menu on either side. Boujie as f&#k, but worth it!
Drinks
Try the Dandy sour at Dandy Brewing Company, it's the best in its class. Milk Tiger or Native Tongues [are both great for cocktails]. The jalapeno margarita at Native Tongues will change your life, but if you’re on 17th Avenue, hit up The Living Room for The Shaft, it's the perfect pregame for your night out.
