One Day in Vancouver: Mike Ayley of MIKEH and Marianas Trench

Mike Ayley of JUNO-award winning band Marianas Trench steps into his debut solo project, MIKEH

While the name MIKEH may not be instantaneously recognizable to a Canadian music fan, we'd say it's only a matter of time before the new musical project from Mike Ayley of Marianas Trench fame becomes a household name.

The debut EP Golden Hour, First Things First

"Dining out is perhaps my favourite pastime of all," says Ayley. "When on tour, I love to discover a gem of a restaurant in every city whenever possible...and find the best Old Fashioned or Margarita the city has to offer."

From morning eats and one of Vancouver's most famous brunch spots to luxe dinner experience within Parq, here are Mike Ayley's favourite places for eats and drinks in his home base.

Cafe Medina is not a secret by any means, but it’s still worth mentioning.

It’s been around for many years and is still lined up for hours on the weekends. I chose this place because you could have a business meeting over breakfast here, an enjoyable bite and coffee solo just enjoying the people watching or a romantic brunch after a great night with the love of your life. The waffles are incredible, and my wife and I love the salted caramel topping the most. They have a bunch of unique Mediterranean-inspired meals too!

Honourable mention [for my favourite breakfast in the Vancouver area] is Hard Bean Brunch Co. in Port Moody.

Lunch

Farmer’s Apprentice is quite difficult to get a table at, but as a walk-in single, or maybe party of two, if you time it right you might get a table. Otherwise, book well in advance.

This place has a pretty small menu but the items on it are done right. It’s in between Broadway and 4th Avenue just off Granville Street. Location is great and it's surprisingly quiet considering how central it is.

Dinner

Honey Salt is on the ground floor of the JW Marriott at Parq Casino. My wife and I have been there maybe 10 times. It has a great vibe; excellent service and the food is delicious.

If you’re feeling lucky, you can just pop upstairs and hit the table games or slots and win a few bucks.

Drinks

The Keefer Bar is so cool! They have an Apothecary theme, and it really shows with the wonderful cocktails. It’s a little out of the way, but worth the trek. Great spot to go with a friend or to finish off a date night.
