We don't mean to break any hearts out there, but cranberry sauce out of a can just won't satiate the taste buds of your dinner guests anymore. Making homemade cranberry sauce is ridiculously easy--stupid easy, even--so there's absolutely no reason not to make it from scratch.
Another thing about a cranberry sauce is that it's multi-purpose. Throw a couple of spoonfuls onto a charcuterie board to complement meats and cheese, mix some with mayo for a bright aioli for leftover turkey sandwiches, it's easy to put a spin on it.
Anyway, just do yourself a solid and try making this sauce.
Spiced apple and cranberry sauce
Place all ingredients except apple in a medium pot and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cook until cranberries start popping, about 5 minutes.
Reduce heat to medium, cover and cook for 5 minutes.
Remove lid, stir in diced apple and cook for 10 minutes, stirring regularly.
Transfer to a bowl or container, cool to room temperature (purée to a finer consistency if desired) and place in refrigerator to chill.
Use as desired.
