After 18 years, seven acclaimed studio albums, five Juno Award-nominations, and millions of streams from listeners across the globe, Canadian-based band Cancer Bats continues to prove that loud, gritty, and ranting punk rock is still alive and well in Canada.

The band’s latest declaration comes in the form of their newest full-length album, Psychic Jailbreak. The 11-track album dispels any doubt fans may have had following the recent departure of one of its founding members thanks to the combination of Liam Cormier’s powerful melodic vocals and the now three-member-band’s ability to deliver the signature high-energy sound that they’ve been synonymous with since 2014.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Cormier, who took some time from touring to fill us in on his favourite food and drink spots in his hometown of Halifax.

Breakfast

My favourite spot in Halifax for coffee in the mornings is called Ramblers. It’s a coffee shop that opened inside a fun bar called Sour Wood. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. you can get great baked goods and coffee and see all your friends from the neighbourhood.

Lunch

Just up the street from Sour Wood/Ramblers is an amazing ice cream place called DeeDee’s where you can eat a cone for lunch with their incredible homemade ice cream, or if you’re a little hungrier, they make an awesome burrito.

Dinner

A new spot that’s just opened up in the North End of Halifax is The Narrows. Super cozy old school pub style spot with amazing takes on classic East Coast foods. Lots of veggie options and they serve coffee all night.

I’m biased because my girlfriend owns the bar, but my favourite late night spot is Field Guide. Best vibe, they’re always playing the best music and have the tastiest food and lots of great cocktails both with and non-alcoholic versions. It’s my favourite spot in the whole city.

Also, this list just scratched the surface, there are so many places in Halifax that will blow your mind in terms of food hospitality and over all great vibe!
