Canadian restaurants join forces to promote #TakeoutDay

Restaurant owners, chefs, culinary leaders and celebrities across Canada aim to turn every Wednesday into #TakeoutDay

In a historic move to save the foodservice industry, several hundred restaurant owners, chefs, culinary leaders and celebrities across Canada have joined forces to turn every Wednesday into #TakeoutDay.

This simple but powerful movement encourages Canadians to order take-out or delivery from their favourite local restaurant and "share" their meal with family and friends on their social media platforms.

On Wednesday, April 15 at 8pm EST Canada's Great Kitchen Party – Home Edition, in partnership with Canada Takeout, will kick things off in style with an epic variety show on Facebook live. Canadians are encouraged to order in and enjoy dinner from the comforts of their own homes as we come together for a virtual concert, showcasing musical entertainment from Canada's top talent including Jim Cuddy, Alan Doyle, Ed Robertson, Barney Bentall and Tom Cochrane to name a few.

"There has never been a time like this, never been a bigger challenge for the restaurant industry. The greatest thing you can do is on April 15th, support your local restaurant by doing takeout," says iconic chef, Mark McEwan.

According to Restaurants Canada, an estimated 800,000 foodservice jobs have already been lost nationwide due to COVID-19. Nearly one in 10 restaurants have already closed permanently and many more might close by the end of April if conditions don't improve. Food service sales are expected to be down nearly $20 billion for the second quarter of 2020.

Whether it's the local mom-and-pop eatery or the popular restaurant that made it on to top dining lists, Canada’s robust and diverse culinary scene is an integral part of Canada's culture and heritage. #TakeoutDay aims to support and save our beloved industry that is so intertwined throughout our country’s unique identity.
