With a voice that is equal parts fierce and fragile, Edmonton-based singer-songwriter Olivia Street and her band, King of Foxes have found a unique sound that exists simultaniously between the familiar and the unknown.
Backed by the instrumental prowess of guitarists Brandon Baker and Reid Thiel, King of Foxes and Street have created a genre-defying blend of indie-garage rock and Britpop with high-octane anthems, captivating vocals, and infectious hooks.
After a highly successful 2019 that saw King of Foxes’ sophomore release, Salt & Honey reach the top 50 of CKUA’s Top 100 albums and chart on radio stations across North America, the talented trio have recently re-released the album on vinyl along with a previously unreleased bonus track titled "No Wrong".
We had a chance to chat with the King of Foxes frontwoman ahead of her upcoming performance at the Juno Edition of Blue Jay Sessions on Friday, March 13 about all of her favourite places to eat and drink in her home base of Edmonton.
Breakfast
Duchess Bake Shop on 124 Street, where breakfast for me consists of flaky, buttery croissants, a latte, and maybe an individual key lime pie for dessert, because who says you can’t have dessert with breakfast?
Lunch
My favourite dish on Whyte Avenue is the Laughing Monkey Hot Pot from Cafe Mosaics. It's a vegan soup (does not contain monkeys) with coconut broth, kale, brussel sprouts, vermicelli. It's spicy and satisfying and somehow makes me feel better about myself in all ways.
Dinner
Bar Bricco on Jasper Avenue is my favourite spot for cheese and charcuterie. Yes, cheese and charcuterie can be dinner. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll order a glass of Barolo and heck, I'll order that even when I'm not feeling fancy.
Drinks
I love sitting at the bar at Pip, or at the window, looking out onto a perfect people-watching corner. They always have an interesting selection of glass pours, and a great cocktail menu. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate.
