Just days after Kitsilano eatery Bishop’s Restaurant announced the end of its celebrated 36-year run, another longrunning Vancouver institution announced today that it too will soon be closing its doors for good.
Since opening inside of one of Mount Pleasant’s oldest historic buildings more than 25 years ago, The Whip has been one of the neighbourhood’s most popular destinations for locals and tourists alike. The restaurant and bar was known for serving elevated pub grub fare, creative cocktails, and local craft beer, as well as hosting unique pop-ups in collaboration with other local businesses throughout the years.
“We were always long-time fans of The Whip. The room is easily one of our favourites in the city, so when it became available a couple of years ago, we jumped at the opportunity to create something new for the neighbourhood to enjoy,” says Cody Allmin, co-founder of Published on Main, soon-to-open Novella, and Twin Sails Brewing. “Although COVID has definitely delayed our initial plans, we look forward to continuing the tradition of bringing something vibrant and fun to the community.”
Although details regarding what will replace the local haunt are sparse, Allmin says exciting ideas are currently in the works and announcements will be made in the very near future.
The Whip will celebrate its last service on January 14. Until then, walk-ins will be welcome Wednesday to Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m.
