Vancouver restaurateurs to reopen veterans club as Hero’s Welcome pub

Co-owners of The American Bar preserve the spirit of Army, Navy and Air Force veterans club

After closing its doors in 2019 following 71 years serving as the local Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans community hub, Vancouver’s beloved Taurus Club is about to get a new lease on life as a new neighbourhood pub.

The new Mount Pleasant pub—which will open later this month under the name Hero’s Welcome—has been reinvigorated thanks to the efforts of long-time community residents and co-owners of The American Bar Patryk Drozd and Simon Fallick, who hope to preserve the spirit of the original space while ushering the club into a new era.

“As long-time patrons of the Taurus Club, this project means a lot to both Simon and I,” explains Drozd. “It has been an incredibly rewarding and humbling experience to give this great space a new lease on life. We look forward to welcoming some familiar faces back as well as new guests for events like karaoke nights, bingo, and meat draws and showcasing all the things that made the Taurus Club such an iconic bar and gathering spot for decades.”

In terms of food and beverage offerings, Hero’s Pub will offer a selection of B.C. draught and craft beer, including a special house Hero’s Lager brewed by Phillips Brewing Co. that will be used to help raise funds for local veterans’ causes. In the kitchen, local chef Monroe Webb has created a menu of classic bar snacks and Heroes Sandwiches such as the Muffaletta (ham, soppressata, mortadella, olive spread, provolone, sesame bread) and the Veggie (coconut bacon, spinach, tomato, onion, pickles, cheddar.)

The refurbished 3,000 square-foot-space will also feature an assortment of Taurus Club memorabilia, along with a patrons pub and games room equipped with pool, pinball, darts, skeeball, and foosball.

Hero’s Welcome will open its doors to guests on December 27 and will then be open daily from 4 p.m. to late. More information can be found online.
