Canadian rockers Big Wreck talk touring and favourite eats across Canada

Rock phenom Big Wreck's favourite food and drink spots when traveling across the country

Following the successful release of their ravely-reviewed 2021 EP last month and a long pandemic-induced pause to live concerts, four-piece rock phenom Big Wreck is finally ready to get back on the road and begin sharing their dynamic live musical experience with fans once again.

The first EP in what will ultimately be an immersive three-volume collection from bandmates Ian Thornley, Dave McMillan, Chris Caddell, and Sekou Lumumba, Big Wreck 7.1 offers a creative combination of the raw anthemic sound of the band’s early years fused with the edgy eclecticism of their more recent releases.

With Big Wreck’s cross-country tour kicking off tomorrow in Belleville, Ontario, we decided it would be a great time to catch up with the talented rock quartet, who took some time to talk about their excitement to get back on the road, their favourite food and drink stops across Canada, and more.

Most memorable meal while on tour across Canada and why?

We’d have to go with Better Than Fred’s in Grande Prairie, AB. For many reasons. John, the owner is a huge supporter of artists in general, and the BBQ is some of the best in North America.

What are some absolutely essential road trip snacks on the Big Wreck tour bus?

Coffee! Coffee is a snack right? The inside joke on our bus is that we always have fruit…always fruit, but we’re not sure anyone has ever actually eaten a piece of fruit on the bus.

It must be nice to be able to tour again now that things are “normal(ish), how does performing live inspire you as musicians?

Well…it’s our purpose. Plain and simple. We were designed as the artists we are, to play music. We’re still not quite back to where we’d like to be, because things are still restricted, but it’s closer, and getting back out and playing gets us one step closer to fulfilling our purpose! It’s also about providing that outlet for fans of live music. We’ve said it a few times, we need it, as much as the fans need it. As musicians, and as fans ourselves, knowing that everyone’s normal life gets a pause pushed on it for a few hours to see a live show is part of what fuels us. Every time we get to step on stage, we’re able to shut out the real world and live in this amazing dream, if even for just a small moment in time. It’s important, and it matters!

The Black Dog Freehouse. We’re usually in Edmonton on the weekends, so it’s rare that we get to go out, but a few of the guys love this place for a quick drink between soundcheck and show if they want to go out.

Calgary (Lunch)

James Joyce Irish Pub has an amazing lunch.

It would be hard not to say The Horseshoe, being a Toronto based band, but the list is so long.

We’re really excited to be playing a brand new venue, HISTORY on this tour!

Montreal (Drinks)

We’re not a band that gets out to party much, so this is a tough one, but you really can’t go wrong with Sir Winston Churchill Pub. It’s a staple, but never disappoints.

Halifax (Late Night Eats)

Anywhere we can get a true Halifax Donair. Panada Pizza is a staple!
