A Toronto plant-based seafood company was recently selected to advance to the semi-finals in the global XPRIZE Feed the Next Billion competition, securing a place among 31 international teams with a chance to claim a piece of the competition’s $15 million prize pool.
The XPRIZE Feed the Next Billion competition tasks teams around the world to develop structured chicken breast or fish fillet analogs that have the same taste, texture, and cooking experience as their conventional counterparts. New School Foods—a company founded in Toronto in 2020—produces whole-cut seafood made from plants with a focus on fish fillets that emulate salmon.
“We’re thrilled and humbled to be named a semi-finalist alongside so many impressive companies. Our team has been hard at work during the last year developing novel production methods and formulations and it’s exciting to see our R&D investments paying off,” said Chris Bryson, New School Foods’ founder and CEO.
If selected to the final 10 teams, New School Foods will secure a slice of an initial $2.5 million pool, and toward the end of 2022, XPRIZE will announce the overall winner and runners-up, who will be awarded $7 million, $2 million, and $1 million, respectively, with one team earning an additional $2 million bonus for developing a sustainable produced at a low cost.
