A band is nothing without a beat and when it comes to drummers keeping the pace in the Canadian country music scene, few are as formidable and passionate as Calgary's Krista Wodelet.
One quarter of the popular country band Nice Horse, the musician has had an exciting year being both a nominee for Drummer of the Year at the 2022 Canadian Country Music Awards and winning (alongside her bandmates) Video of the Year for their self-produced music video for "High School". Most recently, the band also took home a 2022 YYC Music Award for Group of the Year.
With a Top 40 radio hit under their belts for the band's 2021 single "Cowgirl" and being newly minted CCMA Award winners, it feels like the sky is the limit for Nice Horse looking ahead to 2023 and beyond.
Wodelet has had an especially busy year performing for thousands all across the country at a variety of festivals as well as during the televised 2022 CCMA Awards show alongside country superstar Lindsay Ell, but she also cherishes her downtime at home in Calgary too.
From a fun, and often overlooked, brunch spot to a great craft brewery with an all-season patio, here are the drummer's favourite spots to hang out when she's not on the road with the band.
Breakfast
I love Queens Breakfast. The food is delicious and I really love Spicy Ahi Tuna Breakfast Poutine. The best part is that Queens has an extensive (and equally delicious) breakfast cocktail menu. All within walking distance from my house!
Lunch
Lina’s Italian Market, which is also walking distance from my house, has amazing coffee and an extremely tasty selection of pastas, pizzas, and paninis. Aside from that, I love browsing the main grocery area for fancy crackers and cheeses.
Dinner
Pad Thai is a little hidden gem tucked away in a strip mall, but in my opinion, it’s absolutely the best Thai food in Calgary.
The eat-in restaurant has cool ambiance, but this is also my go-to spot for take-out because–you guessed it–it’s walking distance from my house!
Drinks
Citizen Brewing Company is like a little oasis in the middle of an industrial neighbourhood. The heated patio is a great place to sit year-round, and they’ve always got tasty snacks and something interesting on tap. My summer fave has been their Margarita Gose.
The best part? Say it with me now: "It’s walking distance from my house!"
