One Day in Calgary: singer Amy Hef

The singer's favourite food and drink spots in Calgary

Since starting her musical journey as a professional drummer and deciding to embark on her own path as a solo artist in 2008, multifaceted Calgary-based musician Amy Hef has carved out a truly unique career within Canada’s music scene.

After several critically acclaimed singles, a multitude of memorable live performances, and numerous awards that range from Female Artist of the Year in 2017 to Pop Recording of the Year in 2019, the talented singer has found a new home in the country music realm and has plans to release new music inspired by the genre this fall.

With a progressive approach to songwriting that combines her natural talent, compassion, and humour, Hef has become an empowered ambassador for aspiring musicians from all walks of life looking to find their own voice through music.

If you're in Calgary, you can see Amy Hef performing live at the Blue Jay Sessions: Anniversary Edition on Saturday, September 4 alongside Nice Horse's Tara McLeod and Brandi Sidoryk and R&B-pop singer Denise Valle. Limited tickets are available via Showpass.

Breakfast

I’m not a huge breakfast person, but–living in Inglewood–Blackfoot Truckstop Diner is the only place you might catch me in public before noon.

This diner is full of character...and characters! The food is great and this is a place I frequent with my dad as it makes him feel like he’s young again. Plus, you can get breakfast at any time of day.

Lunch

The Hose and Hound is another staple of mine in Inglewood. They have recently renovated their patios giving you the option of being in the sun or under a covered patio.

Their food isn’t your typical pub food with a ton of great options. Also, I don’t think anyone does fries better than The Hose. I’m always a sucker for a good carb!

Dinner

Located in Mission, Mercato knows how to throw down some amazing food.

Make sure you arrive hungry and make sure you go with some of your favourite people because you are going to want to try more than one dish. You can eat family-style here, which I lov, and if you are a steak fan, the epic Bistecca is a must try.

I’ve spent 10 years living off and on in West Hollywood and The Backlot brings those fun, casual WeHo vibes to downtown Calgary. This is a gay bar and everyone is welcome...and you may even get called “gorgeous” by your new favourite bartenders.

Their newly renovated patio is a lot of fun and allows you to sit downstairs or upstairs. They've always got different events throughout the week such as drag shows, karaoke, special fundraisers and once in a while you may even catch an Amy Hef show!

The Backlot is perfect for a drink any day of the week.
