Last night was a big night for Quebec restaurants with the announcement of the inaugural Les Lauriers award winners. The first of their kind in the province, Les Lauriers Awards of Quebec Gastronomy is the province’s equivalent of the James Beard Awards, with prizes handed out across 15 different culinary categories from Chef of the Year to Producer of the Year, as determined by an anonymous jury of individuals in the culinary field.

Montreal’s Le Mousso took home the coveted title of Restaurant of the Year, beating out enRoute award-winning Battuto in Quebec City and Marconi in Montreal; although Le Mousso’s chef, Antonin Mousseau-Rivard, lost out on Chef of the Year to Colombe St-Pierre of Chez St-Pierre in Rimouski (a city in Eastern Quebec).

Patrice Demers of Montreal’s Patrice Patissier won the title of Pastry Chef of the Year for his finessed and decadent desserts. The recipient of the Sommelier of the Year award might have been a bit of a surprise for some, with Quebec’s Marc Lamarre winning out over some well-known Montreal names, like Émily Campeau (Candide) and Vanya Filipovic (Joe Beef group).

Other categories included Mixologist/Barman of the Year, Revelation of the Year, and Public Figure of the Year. You can find the full list of categories, nominees and results on Les Lauriers' website.
