In an ever-growing crowd of independent Canadian musicians, Selci stands out with her haunting vocals and vibrant visual aesthetic.
The Winnipeg-born, Calgary-dwelling alt-pop singer's latest single “Type and Send” is a lighthearted commentary on the endless cycle of back-and-forth text exchanges. Who can't relate to that?
When she's not busy creating dynamic tunes and music videos for people to immerse themselves in, she is happily supporting another main creative industry in the city: its restaurant scene. From brunching around town to delicious tacos at Native Tongues and plenty in between, here's where Selci loves to eat and drink in Calgary.
Breakfast
Donna Mac, and The Beltliner both have dog-friendly patios. Donna Mac is known for its dinners, but they also do an incredible brunch on weekends. It feels like a bit of a hidden gem for brunch because it’s not usually super busy during the day. The menu caters to all sorts of dietary needs. They have gluten-free, vegetarian, or heartier options. At The Beltliner, I usually get the Shakshuka. It’s super tasty.
Lunch
Native Tongues tacos are the bomb. Seed N Salt has the best Cobb Salad, Sidewalk Citizen in Central Memorial Park always has fresh, delicious options and it has the loveliest park setting.
Dinner
I’m such a big fan of Donna Mac. It’s my go-to spot for dinner. I always get the Tuna Crudo. I love that they cater to every type of eater. If I go with a group of friends, I know that I can get something gluten-free, and there’s going to be tons of veggie-friendly options or a juicy steak for whoever wants it. The staff is also really knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is cozy. If I’m looking for something quick, I like to grab a Teriyaki Chicken Don bowl at Mr. Lu Japanese Street Food & Restaurant.
Drinks
Donna Mac, again. This is probably going to sound like an advertisement for them, but honestly whenever I go out, I usually go there. They kind of hit everything for me. They have a really nice selection of wines and cocktails. I like their sparkling rosé, and one of their signature cocktails, called Sunspot. I also recommend I Love You Coffee Shop. In addition to having great coffee, they also have a great selection of ciders. And there are lots of sweet angels that work there that I like to visit.
