Eat This Now Toronto: Egyptian omelette at Maha's Brunch

A delicious Egyptian-style omelette that's bursting with flavour

I wish every city in Canada had a restaurant as heartwarming and tasty as Maha's Brunch.

The family-run (and Michelin Recommended!) eatery in East Toronto opened nearly a decade ago and it has long been one of the most sought-after brunch (and lunch) spots in the city. Co-owner and chef Monika Wahba is best known nationally for competing on Top Chef Canada Season 10 (2022), and introducing Egyptian flavours to viewers from coast-to-coast in the process, and serves up a wide array of delicious dishes via Maha's menu.

Many folks will know that I typically cover each season of Top Chef Canada, and despite the show being dramatic at times as well as occasionally eye-roll worthy, the one thing I love about it is the fact that I have been introduced to so many talented chef/restaurateurs from across Canada. After meeting Monika Wahba, I couldn't imagine my life without her and her wonderful food.

She's truly one of a kind, as many of my peers and chefs will attest to, and boasts an infectious energy that so few people have, so it's no wonder why Toronto foodies as a whole fawn over Maha's so intensely.

But I digress...

Perusing the menu, dishes such as the Egyptian Falafel (falafel-breaded eggs cumin-dusted fries and salad) and the Cairo Classic are just two of the many things you'll want to eat here. With a personal goal of eating my way through the restaurant's entire menu in 2024, I decided to order the Egga this past week.

This Egyptian-style omelette is beauty in simplicity: eggs whisked together with an array of herbs (parsley, dill, fresh and dried coriander), salt and cracked pepper, and then fried in ghee. Once its exterior becomes golden-brown, it's slid onto a plate and served with fresh pita and salata baladi (an Egyptian salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, lemon and olive oil).

Order a honey cardamom latte to go along with this delicious omelette and you will have done brunch just right, in my humble opinion!

Maha's Brunch is located at 226 Greenwood Ave. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays, but is otherwise open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
