With all the buzz about HBO's The Last Of Us and its many, many Alberta filming locations, it made us wonder: what other productions have filmed in other parts of Canada?
Said pondering led us to Hamilton, ON, a city with a burgeoning food scene and an ever-busy film industry. Over the years, the city has seen a wide range of both film and television productions use all aspects of its city limits to bring their projects to life.
Here are 5 notable spots in Hamilton that you can see in scenes from various popular Netflix and TV productions.
Shorty’s Pizza - The Umbrella Academy and Mayor of Kingstown
Hamilton’s popular New-York-style pizzeria has proven to be not only a destination for locals craving a slice, but cool productions looking for a unique space to film as well.
We love a Jeremy Renner (and a pizza) moment, so consider us fans of Mayor of Kingston, but one of the neatest ways to see Shorty’s Pizza on Netflix is during the first few minutes of The Umbrella Academy Season 3 premiere.
The French - CBC’s Strays
This charming Kim’s Convenience spin-off stars Nicole Power as Shannon Ross who left the big city of Toronto for a new career in Hamilton at a pet shelter. The series has had two seasons and is currently awaiting the green light for production on season three.
Naturally, you can see plenty of Hamilton in this series, including the popular restaurant The French during a dining scene.
The Corktown Irish Pub - Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities
At over 80 years and counting, Corktown is Hamilton’s oldest pub. As a result, the Irish-themed watering hole has made various appearances in both film and television productions over the years.
You can see it in lesser known films like The Swearing Jar and Goon: Last of The Enforcers (if you're a 90s kid, you'll think this film has quite the iconic cast with folks like Seann William Scott and Elisha Cuthbert), but the most buzzworthy in recent years is a brief scene in the quirky-slightly-spooky Netflix series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
Quatrefoil - Good Witch
Perhaps best described as a “guilty pleasure” kind of series, the Hallmark production Good Witch had an impressive seven-season run before calling it quits in July of 2021.
Much of the series was filmed in Toronto and area, including parts of Hamilton and the city's famed French restaurant Quatrefoil in Season 5.
Dyments Farm, Market & Bakery - The Umbrella Academy, American Gods and Zak Bagans Haunted Museum
One-part farm event space, one-part market and bakery, Dyments Farm isn't really a restaurant, but its rural setting has been favoured by more than a few productions over the years.
Most notably, the four-season fantasy series American Gods, which utilzied the Dyments Farm market space, as well as a pivotal fight scene highlighting the powers of Diego Hargreeves (“Number Two”) in The Umbrella Academy.
Bonus: Grandad’s Donuts - Arkells - People’s Champ (Official Music Video)
Alright, alright, we know that a music video is not a TV show, but we’d be remiss to not include the iconic and delicious Grandad’s Donuts and its role in the Arkells music video for “People’s Champ”.
The trifecta of doughnuts, Grandad’s awesome throwback aesthetic and, of course, the catchy Arkells tune is nothing short of cinematic perfection!
