Check it Out: A&W debuts Canada's first lidless and compostable cup

A&W Canada's new Zero Cup is currently being tested at locations across Toronto

A to-go cup containing hot liquid with no lid? Oh my!

This week, A&W has begun trialing a new lidless and fully compostable coffee cup, the Zero Cup. The unique and sustainability-minded product is a first for Canada and its design is credited to the UK-based creator ButterflyCup.

"Our new Zero Cup is an exciting step in our journey to reach zero waste. Part of achieving that mission is pioneering the innovations that people need to live more sustainable lives. This new cup is one small way Canadians can take small, simple actions, one day at a time," said Susan Senecal, president and CEO of A&W Canada in this week's announcement.

While the new cup will eventually reach locations across the country, A&W is offering a public preview the Zero Cup at a public event on March 25 and 26 at Evergreen Brickworks. Dubbed "Tomorrow Cafe", the temporary installation will allow attendees to try out the new innovation for themselves (along with some coffee).

A&W's Tomorrow Cafe pop-up will operate on Friday, March 25  from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 26 from 8:00 a.m.-4 p.m.
