It’s always nice to see Canadian cuisine garner an international spotlight, so we were beyond excited to see award-winning Canadian singer Michael Bublé share his affinity for Canadian food and beverage on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week. 

In other exciting news, Restaurants Canada announced the upcoming launch of a first-of-its-kind metaverse marketplace that will cut out price gouging middlemen to allow consumers to connect directly with their local makers. 

Finally, the European Kinder chocolate recall has been extended to Canada, the EWG unveiled this year’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce report, and avian influenza continues to cause chaos in Canada’s poultry industry.

Michael Bublé shares Canadian cuisine with the world

On a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, iconic Canadian singer Michael Bublé popped up in a segment dedicated to the splendour of Canadian cuisine. The award-winning artist gushes about everything from poutine and maple syrup to the Caesar cocktail, Canada’s obsession with ketchup, and more.

Kinder chocolate recalled due to salmonella outbreak

We don’t normally include product recalls in our weekly roundups simply because there are typically too many to cover, but with Easter approaching we thought it would be a good idea to share the news that the salmonella-related recall of Kinder chocolate products was recently expanded to Canada. 

The European outbreak linked to Kinder’s chocolates has already affected more than 130 children under the age of 10, several of whom have been hospitalized.

Avian flu continues to rip through Canadian poultry farms

The last time we reported on the spread of avian influenza in Canada the outbreak was limited to a few farms in Ontario, P.E.I., and Newfoundland and Labrador. This week, government authorities reported cases in at least 12 farms in the aforementioned provinces, along with additional potential cases in Alberta and Quebec, which experts say now poses a significant risk to the industry at large.

Restaurant Canada was in the news again this week after announcing the launch of a new marketplace for Canada’s foodservice industry. 365 Marketplace, which will officially launch at this year's RC Trade Show, will aim to help fuel the economy by enabling buyers and sellers to interact in real-time with the use of 3D models and augmented reality experiences.

Although we highly recommend procuring your produce from a Canadian purveyor, if your shopping list includes any American produce, you’ll likely benefit from knowing what’s on this year’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce report.
