New restaurant Monarca Cocina Mexicana set to open in Vancouver

The sister restaurant to chef Fransisco Higareda's Ophelia is slated to open on April 8

The team behind Vancouver’s Ophelia Cocina Mexicana are gearing up to open a new location in Gastown this week that will aim to offer diners an expansive array of playful, modern-meets-authentic Mexican fare.

Much like Ophelia before it, Monarca Cocina Mexicana was conceived by chef Fransisco Higareda as a nod to his Latin American heritage; while Ophelia was named after chef Higareda’s mother, Monarca pays homage to his father, who grew up near the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

In terms of menu items, guests can expect a similar assortment of the Mexican sides, salsas, starters, and entrees on offer at Ophelia, along with a diverse selection of tacos, local beers and wines, and cocktails with a focus on premium tequilas and mezcals.

Monarca Cocina Mexicana is slated to open on Friday, April 8 and will be open for dinner service Tuesdays through Saturdays from 4 p.m. to midnight. More information can be found online.
