When Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon (RMH BC) introduced the Home for Dinner fundraising initiative in 2018, they did so to provide support to families whose time, energy, and funds are channeled towards life-saving medical treatment for their children.
Now, as the many challenges these families are facing have been amplified due to COVID-19, the importance of campaigns such as Home for Dinner is more apparent than ever.
“Most of us have recently learned about social distancing, but this is nothing new for many families who stay at RMH BC, since they are often caring for children who have compromised immune systems,” says Richard Pass, CEO of Ronald McDonald House B.C. and Yukon. “For these families, sharing a meal with their children in the safety and comfort of the House is a priceless gift. We invite anyone who can host a meal to participate in Home for Dinner--after all, it’s a wonderful reason to reunite with your loved ones and give back to others in need.”
Taking place on October 15, this year’s Home for Dinner fundraiser encourages participants to host a dinner party and ask guests to donate to RMH BC in lieu of bringing a bottle of wine or other gifts. Whether cooking a full-fledged Thanksgiving feast or a casual snack night with friends, Canadians are invited to take part in the national campaign in whatever way they see fit.
Additionally, Home for Dinner participants are also invited to partake in a virtual celebration on October 15, which will feature exclusive entertainment, special guests, an online auction, and more.
There are also several restaurant partners in Vancouver, Kelowna, and the Yukon who have committed to supporting RMH BC, and will offer menu items that can be purchased to contribute to the cause.
The cost to provide accommodation and essential support for a family staying at RMH BC’s 73-bedroom House is $125 per night. To date, the Home for Dinner program has raised more than $100,000 for families in need.
