Is anyone else's grass starting to (finally) turn green? It feels like spring is finally here and we know we're going to be firing up that barbecue at least a couple of times throughout the week. While we're outside enjoying the sunshine and getting our dinner grilled up, we'll make sure to have some Canadian-made tunes keeping us company.
From a powerful new song off of G.R. Gritt's new EP to a pop remix of one of our favourite Lindsay Ell singles of the past year, here are 10 new songs by Canadian artists that we've added to our Spotify playlist.
Barenaked Ladies - Flip
The iconic Canadian group that is the Barenaked Ladies has always had a sound that is all their own. "Flip" is no exception, being peppy pop-rock with plenty of wordsmithing throughout.
Chloe Albert - Long Way Down
Chloe Albert's recently released EP Come Around Again is nothing short of magical. All six songs capture a listener's attention–including the final instrumental track "Ode a Regine"–and we've given the title tune plenty of spins leading up to the album release, but we're now smitten with the roots-y ballad that is "Long Way Down".
G.R. Gritt - Doubt It
Another captivating EP that was also recently released comes by way of Juno Award-winning Anishinaabe/Métis musician G.R. Gritt. Ancestors is a powerful six-track album that touches on the family roots of the singer, historical injustice, self realization and more. "Doubt It", an indie rock leaning track, touches on the former two and offers up impactful lyrics and great production.
JayWood - Creeps
The new EPs are lining up so perfectly alphabetical in this week's music roundup, aren't they? JayWood's five-song album Some Days offers up plenty of great music injected with alt-pop, indie rock, funk and jazz influences. "Creeps" is especially enamouring with chill vocals and a great guitar hook.
Jenn Grant - Flying on Your Own
Halifax singer-songwriter Jenn Grant's new song 'Flying on Your Own" is a dreamy tune that is both calming and inspiring. Hit play and let yourself happily drift away.
Lindsay Ell - Hits me (pop mix)
Lindsay Ell has reworked the lead track from her 2020 acclaimed album heart theory and the talented country singer has turned it into quite the bop. When we're allowed to be on a dance floor at a bar again, we'll definitely be requesting this tune from the DJ.
Until then, we'll be our own DJ in our own kitchen.
Luke McMaster - POV (Recovered & Reimagined)
Longtime Canadian pop-soul crooner Luke McMaster has been releasing unique covers of top-charting hits as of late and we're especially smitten by his take on Arian Grande's "POV". Certainly not an easy song to sing by any means, McMaster brings plenty of heart to the beautiful melody that scales up and down octaves throughout.
Roman Clarke - FAMOUS
Winnipeg-based hip-hop artist Roman Clarke captures your attention quickly with his new single "FAMOUS". Pulsing piano chords alongside a simple beat help propel things along in a song boasting unapologetic lyrics about having fun with no regrets. At least we think that's what it is getting at anyway!
Shawnee Kish - Got It Bad
Edmonton pop artist Shawnee Kish is a vocal powerhouse and hearing her back in action with a new single has us very excited. "Got It Bad" is all about being furiously and passionately in love with someone. It's the kind of fiery love everyone should be searching for.
Two Crows for Comfort - Older Still
There's plenty of charm to be found within Show Me Light, the new album from Winnipeg folk-roots duo Two Crows for Comfort. We're always suckers for a dusky, lightly twangy tune with understated harmonies and that's exactly what you'll find in the album's first track "Older Still".
